First there was Moe:
The bowl cut leader of the Stooges, Moe had a penchant for grabbing the other two by their noses and slapping them around. Moe was the one who started the Stooges along with Vaudevillian Comedian Ted Healy. He was the original Stooge taking the act from the stage to the screen, on to television and on the road appearing in every single one of the short films, features and cartoons that The Three Stooges were featured in.
Then there was Larry:
Moe’s wise cracking sidekick with wild red hair. Moe was always up for some physical punishment and served as Moe’s perfect foil. An accomplished musician and boxer, Larry joined the Stooges act when they finally became known as The Three Stooges in vaudeville. He was in on every slap, eye poke, bang and bonk appearing in every single short film, movie, and even lending his voice in the cartoon series that was later developed for television. When Larry suffered a stroke and could no longer go on, The Three Stooges never made another appearance.
Then there was Curly:
Everybody’s favorite Stooge. The Cherubic funny man, Curly was the one people always remember and do their best to imitate. He was the original third Stooge of the short films appearing as a Stooge for Fourteen Years. Curly was Moe’s younger brother, who brought in just as the Stooges were moving onto pictures.
But wait a minute…
We cannot forget about Shemp:
The other third Stooge. While not beloved as Curly, You cannot deny Shemp’s contribution to the Comedy trio. While some people might see Shemp as the Pete Best of the Three Stooges, he was actually one of the original Stooges on Vaudville, leaving the act to pursue his own successful solo career. Shemp was Moe and Curly’s older brother and when Curly fell ill, Shemp stepped back in to save the act and keep Moe and Larry in work.
Now hold on…
There was also Joe Besser:
The third third Stooge. After Shemp suffered a sudden heart attack and died in 1955 another Stooge came along. Joe was an upcoming comedian looking for a springboard to fame. Appearing in only 16 of the 190 short films, Joe is rather forgettable as a Stooge. He quit after just two years and went on to have a very successful career. He was known as the Stooge that hit others back.
And then
There was Curly Joe:
The Fourth Third Stooge. After Joe left, The Stooges were put out to pasture by Columbia Pictures and the shorts were sold to television stations. Not long after, The Stooges found themselves in demand again. Another stocky comedian with an uncanny resemblance to Curly was found. His name was Joe DeRita and would later be dubbed “Curly Joe”. Curly Joe would be with the stooges as they became one of the highest paid live acts in the country. He would also star alongside Moe in Larry in The New Three Stooges cartoons and short live skits that were made for television.
