“Cop Out” is a police crime drama with a heavy dose of comedy from director Kevin Smith. These two officers have their hands full fighting off the bad guys and trying to get along with each other.
In this hilarious movie, we meet two detectives who don’t take police work too seriously, even though they are aware that their lives are on the line. This story is centered on these two New York police officers who are now partners and know each other very but don’t really see eye-to-eye.
Their methods are unorthodox and although they get the job done in catching the bad guys, the top brass is not really very happy with their methods.
Jimmy (Bruce Willis) has a lot of years on the force while his partner Paul is fairly new to detective work. It’s clear to see that Jimmy and Paul don’t really understand each other and that’s what makes for most of the comedy.
They also have different viewpoints and priorities which results in some hysterically funny conversations and situations. Paul is completely obsessed with the suspicion that his wife is being unfaithful, while Jimmy is totally focused on how he is going to pay for his daughter’s upcoming wedding.
This wedding was supposed to be financed by the sale of Jimmy’s rare baseball card collection which unfortunately has been stolen. Now Jimmy and his partner are tracking down the thief who turns out to be a very dangerous character. It seems that the person who stole the collection is not your ordinary thief, but ruthless gangster.
Along the trail, they meet a variety of thugs and small time criminals that may or may not have a clue on where Jimmy’s card collection is and who the person behind the robbery. The action is non-stop when these two police officers are in the moment, but sometimes they forget the fine points of procedure when arresting suspects.
Jimmy is getting frustrated by the amount of time it’s taking find his collection and his partner is a big part of the problem, because he is allowing his fears that his wife is sleeping with another man to distract him from the job they have to do. As one lead after another turns out to be a dead-end, it seems like Jimmy and Paul will have to resort to some unusual means to catch the thief.
