“[Rec]2” once again test the skills of directors Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza in this sequel to the highly acclaimed and commercially successful Spanish horror film “[Rec],” that brings us face to face with some of the scariest scenes in horror movie history.
15 minutes from where the original film [Rec] ended is the beginning of this horror thriller film, leading us back to the apartment complex where what is suspected to be a contagious virus is transforming people into mindless and extremely violent beasts.
While the logical move is to find a way to destroy the infection, the government wants to assess the situation and an official (Jonathan Mellor) is sent under the protection of a heavily armed SWAT team to see what is going on. Prepared for the worst and totally aware that what they are dealing with has origins unknown the tension between the team and the government officials is sky-high.
Equipped to the hilt with guns and cameras the team moves in filming scenes with mini-cams in their helmets giving close-up views of the transformed residents under the influence of the terror. This gives the movie the hand-held video effect of the original movie.
What they discover is mind-blowing; a nightmare straight out of the worst scene of Dante’s inferno beyond anything they had ever witnessed. The horror of what was happening in this place must not be allowed to escape and infect the world outside its doors. But the fact that the team doesn’t know how this situation developed is scary enough, what’s worse is that they do not know if they will become infected in the process of the investigation.
Thankfully, they make it though the tour of the complex with all members safe and accounted for. After the first assessment, the cause of this scene from hell seems beyond the scope of a virus, instead it has all of the signs of an evil force but what it is exactly is the mystery. When the government official makes this announcement it is clear that he is not simply a man sent to make a report; he is a priest sent to contain the evil demon, find a cure and stay alive. How the priest and the SWAT team are going to accomplish this miracle is beyond anyone’s comprehension and no one is sure how this journey into hell will end.
