Now on DVD: “The Last Song” starring Miley Cyrus and Greg Kinnear

Touchstone Pictures presents the family drama “The Last Song” directed by Julie Anne Robinson with the screenplay by Jeff Van Wie and the author of the book on which the film is based, Nicholas Sparks. Starring: Miley Cyrus, Bobby Coleman, Liam Hemsworth, Hallock Beals, Nick Lashaway, Carly Chaikin, Nick Searcy, Kate Vernon, Kelly Preston and Greg Kinnear.

Ronnie (Miley Cyrus) has been in a bad mood ever since her parents decided to stop fighting and go through a nasty divorce a few years ago. Now that her mother (Kelly Preston) has found someone new and is planning to re-marry, she has decided it’s time for a family reunion of sorts. She has sent her and her kid brother Jonah (Bobby Coleman) to the Southern coastal home of their father Steve (Greg Kinnear) for the summer.

Steve who is a musician loves his family very much; the problem was that he and his wife did not see eye to eye about a lot of things, particularly about living in New York. By now he had hoped things would be better between him and his teenage daughter, but they seem to have gotten worse. He is worried about the fact that Ronnie who is a gifted pianist has quit playing because of her resentment about the divorce: her doesn’t want her to ruin her life because he and his wife divorced. This summer together will hopefully give them both a chance to come to terms with what has happened over the past few years.

Jonah on the other hand is optimistic that his parents can get back together even though his mother is planning to remarry. As they arrive at their father’s house, Jonah is excited about living so close to the beach, but Ronnie continues to be withdrawn and sulk despite her father’s efforts to make amends…until she meets Will (Liam Hemsworth), a handsome, local guy who everyone seems to like.

Everyone has heard that Ronnie is from New York and Will is curious about how life is in the big city. As their relationship develops, Ronnie begins to open her heart and this helps her father to reconnect with her through music, the only thing they still have in common.

With Jonah’s help the parents begin to see each other differently as well and after Ronnie’s first kiss with Will, they realize that their daughter is growing up so maybe they should too.
