Joanna (Keira Knightly) and Michael Reed (Sam Worthington) are a young married couple whose relationship has begun to slip into a comfortable existence of convenience. Although they love each other, some of the underlying issues about trust have started to come to light after Joanna meets Michael’s co-worker, the very attractive designer Laura (Eva Mendes) at a casual business reception. In the process of introducing the two women, Michael tells Joanna that Laura is the “new” designer and Laura corrects him, telling Joanna that she has been with the firm for nearly three months. The fact that Michael will be accompanied by Laura on a two-day business trip doesn’t help matters. Thus the stage is set for questions after they return home.
Michael has been preparing for the discussion from the moment they left the party, but his attempts at reassuring Joanna that he isn’t having an affair with Laura falls short of the mark. When the couple retire for the night, Joanna is wondering what will happen when Michael and Laura are in close quarters.
While Michael did not lie when he told Joanna that nothing had happened, the truth of the matter was that Laura had made it obvious that she was very attracted to him. Now without the ability to go home to the comfort of a warm bed with his wife, he’s beginning to wonder if he can resist Laura’s tempting offer.
Trying to put her fears about Michael’s possible infidelity aside, Joanna heads out to her favorite cafe. As she is about to return home, she encounters her former lover Alex (Guillaume Canet), who is in town for the day for a work assignment. He invites her to dinner and she accepts, happy for the company while Michael is away.
But Alex is still attracted to Joanna and the chemistry between them is obvious. As the evening progresses, they talk about their past relationship and the state of her marriage. Joanna tries to focus on Michael while Alex is determined to seduce her. Meanwhile, Michael is flirting with danger as Laura does her best to make him give in to her desires.
