Families change as people mature; children grow up and move out of the home and start their own lives and families. But that doesn’t mean everything is going great for everyone. Sometimes the decisions parents and their children make can cause disagreements and disappointments when choices are made that may cause harm or misfortune.
For most people the holidays are the time that families gather together to catch up on the events of their lives and share their news. But for the estranged Whitfield family, this Christmas will be the first time in many years since they have all agreed to be under one roof. And everyone is wondering how things will turn out.
Shirley Ann (Loretta Devine) is nervous about this reunion. She has a lot of unanswered questions that she knows she should put aside, but she just can’t. The one big question is what is going to happen with her relationship with Joe (Delroy Lindo); they have been together for a long time, but things are not moving forward, she wants commitment and he doesn’t seem to be interested.
But Shirley Ann is not the only one who is worried. Her daughters Lisa (Regina King), Kelli (Sharon Leal) and Melanie (Lauren London) both are wondering how it’s going to be when everyone is back in the house after all this time. Kelli is also at odds with Lisa because she feels that Lisa lets her husband Malcolm (Laz Alonso) take advantage of her.
But Michael Whitfield (Chris Brown) is looking forward to seeing every one and hoping that his brother Claude (Columbus Short) is able to get holiday leave from the military to be here. Meanwhile Quentin (Idris Elba) is trying to stay one step ahead of the guys that he owes a lot of money too.
Although everyone is excited about the holidays, there are more than a few secrets between them. Michael wants to be an entertainer, Malcolm is having an affair and Claude is married, as all of these family members begin to interact, secrets are revealed and new realities come to light.
