John (John C. Reilly) is at a turning point in his life and just about ready to give up on his dreams of finding happiness with one woman. He was married but not that’s over and his ex-wife Jamie (Catherine Kenner) has moved on with her life and is about to re-marry, but seven years on he’s just stuck in the same place.

So when John is invited to a party by his ex-wife and her husband to be, he really doesn’t think it’s a good idea, but with nothing else on his social calendar he agrees to go. Arriving at the party without any other expectations except to have a few drinks and go home alone, he is completely stunned when he meets Molly (Marisa Tomei) who is like a breath of fresh air with her sparkling personality and beautiful appearance.

And much to everyone’s surprise, she is actually interested in John. The chemistry between them is electric and their relationship starts quickly. But whenever John asks Molly about coming to her house, she always makes excuses. Completely baffled as to the reasons for her behavior, John follows Molly to her house and discovers that there is another man in her life: her grown son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill).

Cyrus is a 21-years old  musician, who is extremely protective of his mother. Obviously this was the reason why Molly wanted to keep her relationship with him a secret but John believes in time he can convince Cyrus that he has the best of intentions toward Molly.

Unfortunately, Cyrus hasn’t gotten the memo that his mother is entitled to choose who she has as a friend and Cyrus makes it clear that he will do anything to protect her. Although Molly is blind to the intense battle of wills that is taking place between John and Cyrus, it’s very clear that she wants John to be a part of their lives. The relationship begins to take on another dynamic as John shows no signs of letting the woman of his dreams slip away and Cyrus is just as determined not to share Molly with anyone.
