Oliver Martin (Ashton Kutcher) thought he had his life pretty well mapped out until he met Emily Friehl (Amanda Peet). He first saw her in the waiting area at the airport and the attraction was immediate. After a lot of flirting and wondering, Emily being the bad girl makes the first move and the good guy Oliver falls head over heels in love, but refuses to admit it to himself. Instead after their mad passion aboard their flight, they spend a day together exchanging ideas and hanging out having fun, they both decide that they are not right for each other.
Although Oliver has his life planned with every detail, Emily doesn’t have much faith in plans and prefers to go with the flow. Oliver is so confident that things will go his way that he gives Emily his mother’s telephone number and tells her to call and check in with him in six years. And with that they go their separate ways.
But as fate would have it, Oliver meets Emily before the six years are up and they pick up their relationship where they left off. Meanwhile Oliver is still working on his plan and Emily is still in the process of finding herself. But neither Oliver nor Emily can deny the feelings they have for each other.
Every time that they meet their friendship deepens and soon they are both asking the “What if…” question and trying to see how their lives would be if they were together. But because their lives have moved in different directions, they both have significant others. However when Emily discovers Oliver is about to get married, suddenly she realizes that she was mistaken when she told him she was not the right person for him.
Oliver realizes it too and decides that if his plans are going to become a reality they have to include Emily, no matter what their differences may be, their chemistry is undeniable and it feels a lot like love to him.
