As the new girl in her elementary grade school Sophie (Marion Cotillard) is having a hard time fitting in until Julian (Guillaume Canet) decides to befriend her by playing a game based on the possession of a colorful tin: whoever has the tin is bound to fulfill the dare given. Soon these two become the best of friends, saving each other from the boredom that comes with being having to live by the rules all the time. They share all of their secrets and as they begin to play the game they see how much fun it can be to do something unpredictable or shocking.

From childhood pranks to adolescent stunts, with each passing year the challenges become more outrageous. As they enter high school the game continues, but now the stakes involve more than just silly, harmless stunts and often the dares have little regard for anyone else involved. In the process of fulfilling the dare they wreak havoc on the lives of their families and friends. Julian and Sophie’s relationship continues to evolve with each year drawing them deeper in love, but afraid to risk rejection, both of them wondering who will have the courage to make the first move.

Logically both Julian and Sophie know that they should stop playing the game , but each time they try to stop, life loses its thrill and they are back in the game. But now the stakes are even higher and sometimes become outright dangerous to life and limb, but Sophie and Julian are addicted to the rush of excitement that comes with playing the game. But as with all good things, they soon come to an end and Sophie decides that her feelings are getting to intense and she cannot continue.

Julian begins to adjust to his life without Sophie. He meet a girl and decides to move forward with his life. But on his wedding day Sophie returns challenging him to the greatest dare ever.
