As a result Kate began drinking which evolved into an addiction. Now they are trying to reconstruct their lives and their troubled marriage. Now Kate is receiving help to stop drinking and has been sober for one year.

With this progress, Kate and John decide to adopt a child. As they begin to learn about the process, they meet a young Estonian girl, Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), at the St. Marina Orphanage. Kate and John are both impressed with the nine-year old girl who is so well-mannered and intelligent and decide to adopt her.

But their son Daniel, is not overjoyed by the new addition to the family, but Max, their youngest daughter who is a deaf-mute is completely delighted about having a sister in the beginning. But gradually strange things begin to happen and Kate starts to believe that Esther is not as innocent as she wants people to believe. More than once Esther has behaved in a manipulative and abused way toward Daniel and Max.

As time passes things continue to become more difficult and Kate discusses the possibility with John that Esther is could be psychologically disturbed. But John doesn’t believe that there is anything wrong with Esther except growing pains. But John’s refusal to believe her creates new problems in their marriage. Finally Kate returns to the orphanage to learn more about Esther’s past. What she discovers from one of the employees is that there were a lot of unanswered questions about Esther but there was a mystery as well. Now Kate has to decide if she should trust her instincts and investigate the information or not.
