Adam Kurtzman (Ashton Kutcher) is just a regular guy who is having trouble in the dating department; he’s attracting beautiful women but nothing much is holding his attention. In fact he can’t remember any of the women he’s been dating.
So his friends suggest that he have sex with a friend. When the discussion turns to Emma Franklin (Natalie Portman) who’s his best friend , everyone thinks that this the perfect match, but Adam has never thought of Emma romantically and doesn’t think that she thinks of him that way either. But Adam’s friends convince him to see what happens.
Much to Adam’s surprise Emma returns his kiss and before long the romance was on. Emma thinks that sex with Adam is a great idea because all she wants is sex, no romance and she believes that’s all Adam wants as well. At first Adam thinks it will never work, but it does and he becomes the envy of all of his friends.
Emma is a doctor who works long hours and thinks that love makes everything more complicated. Beside that she doubts that any two people can remain monogamous for very long. All she wants is the physical pleasure that she can tuck neatly into her schedule and go on with her life. Adam on the other hand is not totally opposed to romance with sex, but all of his friends think that he’s nuts to try to make the relationship more than it is. But Adam is beginning to feel like he is an order of pizza with this no strings attached, sex on demand style relationship.
As Emma and Adam continue to keep their relationship strictly physical, with each of them free to see whoever they please, things start to get sticky emotionally. Although Emma hates to admit it, her feelings for Adam are beginning to make it difficult to see him with another women and the same thing is happening to Adam.
Things finally break down and Adam admits how he feels. Is it possible for these two lovers and friends to remain that way with no strings attached?
