For most of his life to outsiders, Tyler Hawkins (Robert Pattinson) has appeared to be a lucky young man; his father Charles Hawkins (Pierce Brosnan) is powerful and his wealth provided him, along with his brother and sister all of the material comforts he wanted. But all of this came at a high price; his father had very little time to spend with his family and the time he was with them was strained; Charles is not an outwardly affectionate man, he believed that it was more important to give his family financial security. Unfortunately, the strain became too much for Tyler’s brother and when he committed suicide, it tore the family apart and sent Tyler into a tailspin. Now his mother has left and the rift between Tyler and his father is increasing daily.

Tyler’s grief over his brother’s death has shifted his perspective and he has become reckless to the point of risking his life by intervening in a street fight where he comes to the aid of a man is being mugged. But as fate would have it Tyler is arrested and when his father bails him out of jail, his bitterness only increases because he is now even more in debt to his father. Tyler’s friend Aidan (Tate Ellington), is worried about him and encourages him to get back into the social life of college starting by meeting the new girl in his class, Ally Craig (Emilie de Ravin) who just happens to be the daughter of Police Sergeant Craig (Chris Cooper) who arrested Tyler.

Ally, has also suffered a personal tragedy when she witnessed her mother’s murder. If anyone can understand what Tyler is going through, it is certainly Ally. As their friendship slowly evolves into love, all of the good things that have come about by their union is put to the test by both of their families; Ally’s father is distrustful of Tyler because of his arrest and Tyler’s father is angry that he is wasting his life because he is unsure of which direction he want his life to follow. Ally also has to face the choice of making her own decision or blindly following her father’s advice.
