The day started out on a note of excitement, Tommy was going to the amusement park with his father, but the day ended on a note of panic for the detective when his son disappeared into thin air. That day happened eight years ago, but Tom has not had a peaceful day since it happened. He is ridden with guilt and remorse; he refuses to accept that Tommy is dead because the police never found a body. As a result Tom has become obsessed with his work trying to find clues that will help him find his son and his marriage is suffering.
His wife Barbara is also hurting but has accepted the fact that her son is dead even though his body has never been found. But each time she tries to pack up her son’s things to bring a sense of closure to their lives, Tom becomes hysterical and refuses to let her touch anything in Tommy’s room.
But one day, Tom receives a mysterious phone call that leads him to the site where they find the remains of young boy who was brutally murdered 50 years before. Tom decides to investigate the case because of the similarities and on the remote chance that he will be able to solve this case if not that of his own son.
He pulls the case file and goes to see the people who were involved in the case. But when he meets Matthew Wakefield (Josh Lucas) the two cases have so much in common that Tom becomes convinced that somehow this man was involved in his son’s case. Determined to unravel the mystery behind Tommy’s disappearance, he pushes the limits of the law to uncover the truth, hoping that he will find his son alive or be able to close this chapter of his life and move on.
