Throughout the 20th century there have been reports of sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) around the world; in South America, Europe, the United States and China. For the most part, authorities have played down the fact that in most cases when military weaponry has been used to destroyed these objects they have failed. Scientists and politicians alike are at a loss to explain what these objects were and who was responsible for their operation.
Most notably in the 1940s one sighting lead to a highly publicized military encounter with one of these objects, but when the dust settled, several civilians were dead, but the object remained virtually unscathed.
Now in 2011, the terrifying reality of whom and what could have possibly been behind all of the sightings in the past comes into focus with the ominous sighting of what is believed to be a cluster of meteors.
As the military prepares to assist with the evacuation of Santa Monica, live reports begin to stream in near the location where the meteors have been predicted to land. Unfortunately, these “meteors” prove to be weapons and civilians find themselves under attack and the military under prepared for the encounter.
All around the world cities are being bombarded by a force that is proving to be superior to anything the human military has to offer. In a battle unlike anything they could have imagined against a faceless enemy, Marine staff sergeant Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) begins to realize that what is really happening is that the enemy is systematically removing the population of the planet to make use of its resources.
Faced with the reality that Earth is in the process of being colonized, Nantz and his new platoon must find what the weakness of this enemy may be in order to defeat them. But with very little time and even less information, discovering the key to the destruction of the enemy forces will take a miracle; without it they will witness the end of human kind.
